The default behavior has an icon on the system tray pop up a baloon informing the user that they need to update their JRE. Then we can tell our clients when to update their JRE. We would like to see the auto-update disabled by default. To disable java update, deselect the check for updates automatically check box. This is not acceptable to us, and we suspect it is not acceptable to other developers. Here are the registry keys we use to disable updates: 64-bit HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\JavaSoft\Java Update\Policy 'EnableJavaUpdate'dword:00000000. This puts Sun in control of OUR release schedule. Disable updates and push them out as you need is the best option for administering your PCs. Since the software prompts uneducated users to update their JRE this forces developers to make sure their software works with the latest JRE regardless of the developer's priorities. I have been deploying JRE using the following script for the last several versions now and it's worked very well. We aren't yet deploying JRE 7, but JRE 6 has a seperate program for the Auto Updater that can be uninstalled.
